THE Liberal Democrat leader of Somerset West and Taunton Council and the party’s Parliamentary spokesperson in Taunton Deane have strongly condemned President Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, calling for tougher action against Russian interests.
Cllr Federica Smith-Roberts raised the Ukrainian invasion by Russian forces in the full meeting of the council held the same day, (yesterday, Thursday).
She said: “The council meeting highlighted the plight of the people and local communities of Ukraine on a fateful day and many councillors have expressed their solidarity with them.
We must stand in support of Ukrainians."
Gideon Amos, the Liberal Democrats Parliamentary spokesperson said: “This is an act of war on the sovereign nation of Ukrainian people by an increasingly unhinged President Putin and we stand with them.
"It is utterly unacceptable, not least to many Russians, and marks one of the darkest days in European history.
"Putin threatens us all and now is the time for the UK to respond by sanctioning all Russian interests, including London’s property-owning Russian oligarchs.
"Spending on our defence will be vital and I very much hope our repeated call for our country to use solar and wind to become self-sufficient in energy will now be listened to by the Conservative government.
"The UK has continued importing gas from Russia and overseas to heat our homes for far too long.
"The urgency of the energy revolution now matters for our security as well as for our planet."
