COUNCILLOR JEFFERSON HORSLEY
Jefferson has been a councillor for 25 of the last 29 years. He has represented Fairwater, a north-western ward of Taunton all this time and his home is situated in the ward. He had a successful business career primarily in consumer finance before switching to teaching in 1980 which brought him to teach Economics and Business Studies at Taunton School where he remained until his early retirement in the 90’s.
He served on the Board of Citizens Advice for 16 years until 2007 as well as chairing the Governors of Friends School Sidcot for 9 years terminating in 2008. He also chaired Taunton Association for the Homeless from 1997 until 2006 as well as serving as a Governor of Somerset College for 8 years.
He was leader of Taunton Deane Borough Council from 1991 to 2003 (with a short break during 1997/98) and hopes his experience can assist the next generation of younger Liberal Democrats “not to make the same mistakes as I did”.
“The Liberal motto of liberty, equality and community are dear to my heart and I want to build a fair, free and open society for all. That has guided me over the years in actions and decisions I have been involved in at TDBC. I have always been susceptible to rational argument.
“The future lies with young people. We need to encourage their involvement in political decision making. The UK is slipping into an era of greater economic inequality, more debt and more difficulties for the younger people to find decent jobs and get on the housing ladder. To overcome these problems is my Number 1 priority.”
COUNCILLOR SUE LEES
Sue lives with her husband Richard, who is also a Taunton Deane Borough Councillor and their home is situated in the Eastgate Ward which Richard represents.
“I was elected onto Taunton Deane Borough Council, representing the people in the Fairwater Ward in May, 2007.
In 2004/5 I became Deputy Mayoress and in 2005/6 became Mayoress for Taunton Deane Borough council - an honour I will never forget. It was seeing Richard as Mayor and finding out just how much a Councillor puts into supporting the people of their Ward that made me determined to put myself forward and gain a seat as a councillor in the Fairwater Ward.
Professionally I have worked as a Secretary for Lloyds Bank, and before that for Somerset County Council. I currently do relief work for MENCAP supporting two young ladies within their own home - a rewarding job, which fits in well with my council duties.
As a Councillor I strive to support everyone in the Fairwater Ward, and work well in the team of three councillors representing the Ward. I play my part in sitting on various committees and work for the good of the people within Taunton Deane.
I feel I am approachable and would, and do, make myself available to people that need a Councillor representing them at any time. Councillors should work for the good of the people of the Borough, that is always my aim.”
Sue is very much a family-orientated person being a proud Grandmother and having two grandchildren and two daughters.
