Local Liberal Democrats are disgusted that Government is forcing our Fire Services to continue to have to make drastic cuts to the crucial services they provide.
Cuts being made to the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Authority of 24% by the Conservative government mean proposals are now being considered to close 8 fire stations and permanently remove fire engines from others, including Taunton, Wellington, Bridgwater and Williton. A roving service of only 6 engines would replace the 16 to be lost. The full proposals can be read here
Local Liberal Democrats are concerned that the Fire Station closures and loss of fire engines could be followed by reductions to the number of firefighters. Retained, on-call firefighters are already leaving in large numbers.
Parliamentary candidate Gideon Amos described the cuts as “more of the top down, ‘public bad, private good’ ideology from the Conservative government” and urges everyone to sign this petition and write to their MP to demand these cuts are halted. LibDem councillor on the Authority, Simon Coles condemned its “shrinking budget” and is pushing for incentives to reverse the loss of retained firefighters. Please add you name below - there really is a chance of persuading Government to think again. Thank you!
