SHOULD TAUNTON DEANE BOROUGH COUNCIL (TDBC) MERGE WITH
WEST SOMERSET COUNCIL (WSC)?

West Somerset has been considered “not viable” financially since 2012 and has had major financial problems since.   It is proposed by both the Conservative run Councils that TDBC and WSC should now consider merging.  The decision is to be made on 26 July.

Your Taunton Deane Liberal Democrat councillors oppose this merger on many grounds, not least because Taunton Deane will be using its money (your money) to support West Somerset.    This questionnaire asks your views on some financial aspects of the proposed merger.

This is an extract from the report produced by Taunton Deane Borough Council: para 2.3.10

“West Somerset are running on minimum reserves and the impact of the Hinkley B business rates appeal means that West Somerset is not considered viable going forward unless special measures are implemented;”

2. If a merger between councils is required to make savings, should we be allowed to decide with which council we should merge in order to safeguard services?
