Gideon Amos has been chosen by members of Taunton Deane Liberal Democrats to be the Party's Prospective Parliamentary Candidate in the event of any Election until May 2017.
Gideon is an exceptional candidate, having received an OBE for services to sustainable development as well having led the Lib Dems on Oxford City Council.
Gideon grew up in Somerset and lives with his family on Staplegrove Road in Taunton. He has been actively working with members of the Local Party since leaving the Senior Civil Service and setting up his own practice.
Interviewed in the Somerset County Gazette Gideon said: "Recent weeks have seen unprecedented and worrying events in the UK which bring huge dangers for Taunton jobs and the economy, particularly given that the Conservative government apparently had no plan for the day after the referendum it called.
"With the UK at a crossroads in its role in the world, LibDems with our pro-Europe and international outlook, and our belief in a fair, free and liberal Britain will defend all of our trading links with Europe and the world and provide the rock of tolerance, openness and stability our country and its communities now need so badly."
He believes the referendum result should be accepted subject to giving the public the chance to accept or reject any plan worked out for a future outside the EU.
He added: "I am eager for the next General Election, whenever it comes, people want to hold the Conservatives to account for their chaotic handling of our country's future including the chances they're taking with the very survival of the United Kingdom."
Gideon qualified as a chartered architect and specialises in work on major energy projects including offshore wind farms. He led the Government's consenting of the UK's first tidal lagoon - planned for Swansea Bay. He is a former chief executive of the Town and Country Planning Association, famous for pioneering the Garden City method of development.
