Petition: End Council Tax Unfairness - Protect Our Services

Local Liberal Democrats have launched a petition calling for an increase in government funding for local authorities like Somerset Council.

Somerset declared a financial emergency last year, saying it was one of many councils facing significant pressures on its finances driven by inflation, spiralling costs – notably in social care – and a “broken” system for funding local government.

It is now attempting to bridge a £100million funding gap although its request to increase Council Tax by ten per cent as part of its measures have been rejected by the government.

The petition has been launched by Gideon Amos, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Taunton and Wellington.
